England 29/03/2013 – In the past decade, sales of traditional equestrian clothing haveslowed as new styles and materials have become available.
However, it looks like demand for traditional equestrian clothing is once again growing. Riders are increasingly looking for riding clothes made from traditional fabrics like tweed and wool. They are doing so for several reasons, but the biggest reason seems to be that traditional riding clothing and accessories wear well as well as look good.
Riders are recognising that the cut and design of traditional riding clothes is every bit as good as that of modern riding gear. Sales of traditional riding jackets are particularly strong. Tweed jackets look better. They are light and comfortable to wear, but still keep the rider warm. On really cold days riders can choose to wear a fleece or gilet over the top. This gives modern riders the best of both worlds.
Most traditional equestrian clothing is made by older firms. They have been making this kind of clothing for decades, so understand what it takes to make clothes that look good regardless of how often they are worn or what weather they are worn in. However, designers of traditional riding gear are not stuck in the past. Many of them have incorporated modern fabrics into their riding gear, usually as a lining or a protective coating. Their clothes still look traditional, but have all of the functionality of those made from modern fabrics.
A classic example of a traditional design that has found a new following is the Galway boot. This boot is made from leather, but has recently been updated to include a modernbreathable Goretex lining. Riders get the benefit of a lining made from modern fabrics with the good looks and durability of an outer skin made from leather.
The traditional brands are the most popular
