Liverpool, UK, (7th March, 2012) – The nation is going sport mad in 2012, but providing some release from the pressures of picking up a gold, a host of celebrities and sporting stars will be arriving in Liverpool to raise money for Sport Relief. In the latest of a series of challenges set to the stars, Teams England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales will each take their turns to row the equivalent of 138 miles – the distance between Liverpool and Belfast, before making tracks to their next challenge in Belfast.
Teams heading to Liverpool ONE are:
- Team Wales on Sunday 11th March – including TV’s Gethin Jones, rugby legend Gareth Thomas and Olympian Iwan Thomas
- Team England on Monday 12th March – including TV’s Phil Spencer, cyclist Chris Boardman MBE and sailing’s Dame Ellen MacArthur
- Team Scotland on Wednesday 14th March – including rugby star Kenny Logan, athletics star Stephanie Cook and weather presenter Cat Cubie
- Team Ireland on Saturday 17th March – including TV stars Craig Doyle, Diarmuid Gavin and Amanda Byram
‘Team England’ will arrive at the Liver Building after cycling from Wales on Sunday, and head to Paradise Place in Liverpool ONE to hit the rowing machines. Their arrival marks the latest leg of the ‘First Nation Home’ challenge for Sport Relief; a seven day, 1,000-mile race around the UK and Ireland.
Donna Howitt, Marketing Director at Liverpool ONE said: “Sport Relief is a great way for everyone to raise money for those people who need it most. We’re really pleased to be able to welcome teams from across the UK for their latest challenge, and I’m sure that our visitors will turn out in force to cheer them on during what should be a gruelling task.”
The celebrity teams from across the UK will be taking part in the challenge which sees them cycle, row, run and sail.
The First Nation Home challenge starts on 10th March 2012, and anyone can join in to help represent their country for the final 6-mile leg in each nation’s capital city on Sunday 25th March 2012.
