The Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) opened the National Fork Lift Safety Week from 19-25th September this year, and came to a range of conclusions which highlighted widespread misuse of forklift trucks and a lack of health and safety training for forklift truck operators.
The FLTA found that over 1.2 million workers in the UK could be at risk of a serious accident due to inadequate training in working near forklifts, whilst annually, five to 10 Britons are killed by forklifts and approximately 400 are hospitalised with major injuries. Upon researching data from the Office for National Statistics, FLTA also found that one in 12 UK employees regularly work near forklifts, but fewer than half of these receive the minimum recommended training for their job.
