Ingle & Rhode Welcome Imminent Arrival Of Fairtrade Gold Certification

London, England, (April 23, 2010) – Ingle & Rhode, the UK’s principal retailer of ethical jewellery and custom engagement rings produced using conflict-free diamonds and Fairtrade gold, welcome the arrival of official certification by the Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO) and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) which will help small mining communities get a fairer deal when mining for gold.

The system that will be borne from the partnership will herald a new era for small scale gold miners and will see them receive a better price for the fruits of their labour. The new standards will ensure that miners are guaranteed the minimum Fairtrade price for their gold and will help to secure their overall safety during mining practices – certified miners will be given targets to try and eliminate their use of toxins in gold and material recovery which will be to the workers’ benefit.

The new partnership means interested businesses will be able to use the FAIRTRADE and FAIRMINED symbols on certified gold products. Fairtrade and Fairmined gold will not contribute to any measure of conflict and will help to increase the economic stability of regions through transparency and assist with peace building efforts. Ingle & Rhode, who strenuously promote the benefits of conflict free diamonds and ethical jewellery, welcome the move with open arms and believe it is a solid foundation for the industry to work on.

“Everybody knows about Fairtrade food because of its consistent availability in supermarkets and cafes, but not many know that the Fairtrade label will extend to gold mining as well,” says Tim Ingle of Ingle & Rhode. “This will give many miners the chance to empower themselves and get fairer deals. It will afford a measure of fairness and traceability. The customer will also benefit too, knowing that ethical jewellery displaying the Fairtrade logo has been mined fairly, and that their money isn’t funding a war on foreign soil.”
