Ingle & Rhode Comment On Fairtrade Gold For BBC Radio 4

London, England, (April 23, 2010) – Ingle & Rhode, the UK’s principal retailer of ethical jewellery and custom engagement rings produced using conflict-free diamonds and Fairtrade gold, were recently invited to talk to Catherine Carr from BBC Radio 4’s You And Yours programme to discuss the new Fairtrade gold mining agreement.

An agreement between the Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO) and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) will see the Fairtrade brand extend to jewellery for the first time, and will hopefully bring some fairness and transparency to an industry steeped in conflict and ethical issues. Miners in small villages will be able to get a better price for the gold they mine, and no profits will be used to fund conflict and violence in problem regions.

BBC Radio 4’s You And Yours programme were commenting on the deal and the ethics of the wider jewellery industry in general, and interviewed Ingle & Rhode managing director, David Rhode, for his thoughts on the move. Ingle & Rhode have long championed the benefits to the industry of using conflict free diamonds and ethical jewellery, and the five-minute segment covers areas such as the financial impact felt by ethical trading, what future changes will be made to future jewellery, the role played by wholesalers and more.

“The problem most jewellers have is they can’t tell you where their materials are from. We can tell you where ours are from, who had handled them and the process by which they are turned into your jewellery,” says David Rhode of Ingle & Rhode on the programme. “We deal with a very short supply chain and we don’t deal with wholesalers who are handling materials from different sources. One of the big changes we’ll see with the introduction of Fairtrade gold is their will be a Fairtrade hallmark inside wedding bands made from Fairtrade gold. We are not greedy with our margins; that allows us to compete in the marketplace against more traditional jewellers.”
