Dru Yoga Comment on Cult Following of Yoga Helping to Reduce Workplace Stress

Bangor, North Wales (17 August, 2011)Dru Yoga, a leading online yoga specialist, have commented on research claiming Dru yoga can help to significantly reduce stress caused by demanding jobs and busy lifestyles.

Yoga has built up somewhat of a cult following in the UK and is proving to be a particularly popular form of exercise, with increased interest in the various yoga styles, such as Iyengar, Dru and Bikram. As both as a result of this success and a contributing factor to its continued growth, a number of yoga classes and retreats are now available in the UK. With many celebrities being well-known followers of this fantastic form of exercise, public awareness of yoga and its various disciplines is high, with some yoga teachers even having emerged with cult ‘celebrity’ status, such as Bikram Choudhury.

Dru Yoga is one of the UK’s longest established and most popular yoga schools, offering a therapeutic style of yoga which can be undertaken by people of various ages and fitness levels. The word ‘Dru’ translates in Sanskrit as ‘North Star’ – with stars ultimately rotating around the still point that is the North Star. Therefore, Dru Yoga uses this analogy to convey that yoga can help participants achieve inner stillness and peace, and in order for a person to maintain this inner calm and apply it to all areas of their life, yoga should be practiced regularly.

The recent controlled and randomised study, which was published by the Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Health, revealed that Dru Yoga techniques can significantly reduce a person’s stress levels, in comparison to the results of the control group who did not participate in Dru Yoga techniques. The study indicates that Dru Yoga can actually improve the participant’s sense of inner peace and wellbeing, even from the very first session.

A separate study, which was designed by psychiatrists, found that 89% of the 450 students surveyed claimed they now felt better equipped to manage any stress they did still experience. 91% of the participants also stated that by partaking in the Dru Yoga exercises, which have gained a cult following in the UK, they could ultimately help transform negative thinking; 68% of people stated that their sleep patterns had improved; 85% reported that their energy levels had improved; 80% claimed that their stamina and strength had shown improvement and 86% witnessed an improvement in their breathing.

As stress in the workplace costs the UK over £530 million a year, researchers involved in the study recommended that employers should consider providing yoga classes to their employees to enhance their emotional and physical wellbeing, and can help them to cope more effectively in stressful workplace situations.

A spokesperson for Dru Yoga commented: “We encourage anyone interested in yoga to consider participating in local yoga classes or workshops which are held throughout the UK. We also offer a yoga retreats at our Dru Yoga centre in Snowdonia, and avid yoga participants can also expand on their yoga practices with the Dru Yoga course or the Dru Yoga teacher training course which can help them to make a career out of their passion.
