England 27/2/2013 – When the weather is bad, everyone needs a lift and it looks like many are turning to tanning products to help battle the blues
The UK is once again in the throes of a cold winter. Many are suffering from the winter blues, so are looking for little ways to lift their mood. Beauty treatments such as spray tans are at the top of many people’s list of treats to lift them out of the doldrums.
Many people feel great after they get a new tan. When they look in the mirror, a fitter, healthier looking person looks back at them. This, subtly, but automatically improves their self-esteem and lifts their mood. Some people even feel more energised. In reality, they are no fitter or healthier than before they had their tan applied. It is almost a case of mind over matter. What they see in the mirror informs their perception of themselves and consequently affects how they feel.
Science supports this approach
To some the idea a fake tan can lift a person’s mood to such a degree is hard to fathom. However, the connection between tanning and feelings of self-esteem or well-being has actually been studied by psychologists. There is, in fact, strong evidence that there is indeed a connection between the two. Dr Clay Routledge, Ph.D first discovered the connection between tanning habits and self-esteem in the mid-90, and published a piece about it in Psychology Today.
He demonstrated that, for large sections of the population, there really is a connection between how tanned they are and their levels of self-esteem. In other words, how good they feel about themselves. Most people are not aware of this on a conscious level. However, when they feel low they automatically treat themselves to a beauty treatment to lift their spirits. Often it is tanning products or saloons they turn to, especially in the winter when they have not had the chance to tan naturally in the sun.
Sales of self-tanning products, such as those sold by Beau Bronz, remain strong in the winter. This is despite the fact people are often wrapped up in layers of clothing during the winter. Further demonstrating that for many having a nice tan is about far more than just looking good in their swimwear.
