England 21/03/2013 – There is a growing pool of experts who believe that the E-cig will save hundreds of lives, which is one reason their use is growing in popularity
The E Cig has only been available in the UK since 2007. In just a short period of time they have become extremely popular. Their popularity is largely down to the fact that e-cigarettes can legally be used indoors. This means that smokers do not have to stand in the rain or get up and go outside at social occasions.
Many people see e-cigarettes as a win, win. Smokers are happy and the people around them are happy too. E-cigarettes contain nothing but nicotine and produce only water vapour; therefore, it is thought that there is no danger from second hand smoke. In addition, there is no smell.
The fact that smoke is not being taken into the lungs and that smokers are not being subjected to as many carcinogens is seen by some health bodies as potentially beneficial. Scientific studies are still ongoing, but the American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP) have said – “the possibility exists to save the lives of four million of the eight million current adult American smokers who will otherwise die of a tobacco-related illness over the next twenty years”. Many smokers use electronic cigarettes as a way of weaning themselves off cigarettes and give up smoking completely. For this group the health benefits are significant.
The standard of e-cigarettes varies
However, there are concerns being raised about the fact that what is in an e-cig cartridge is, as yet, not universally controlled. Each manufacturer produces their nicotine cartridges differently and do not follow a specific standard. Consumers are slowly, becoming aware of this, so are sticking to the more well known and established brands like E-Lites, rather than buying un-branded e-cigarettes and cartridges. They see this as a way of better controlling what is going into their bodies. In addition, using an established brand usually means a better delivery system that more closely resembles the experience of smoking, something consumers are increasingly seeking.
