PVC Fabric Set For a Comeback

England – 02/02/2012The Popularity of PVC Fabric Fluctuates but Now It is Once Again Becoming Popular

PVC fabric has been with us for decades. It has fallen in and out of fashion more times than you can count. Yet, for some reason, it hangs on and pops up on the catwalk on a regular basis.

When you consider that PVC fabric was originally developed as a material to use to make soft furnishings, it is weird to see it being worn as clothing. However, that is exactly what it was designed for, it was developed to replace vinyl, which was a little thick and stiff to be used for all furnishings.

The fact that PVC was so soft and pliable is what gave fashion designers the idea to use it as a clothing fabric. It was great, because it could be made to look like rubber, leather or latex. The fact it was waterproof, washable and could be produced in a wide array of colours or textures meant it was soon a very popular fabric.

As well as being used for clothing it was used to make handbags, luggage, purses and things like phone and laptop covers. It has remained popular for use in this way. Plus, of course, it continues to be widely used for soft furnishings. The recent trend towards leather finish sofas and beds has really helped boost demand for this fabric.

The future of PVC fabric is bright

By 2016, production of PVC will reach 40 million tonnes. Admittedly, the vast majority of that production will not be PVC fabric, rather things like pipes and cable covers, but a huge amount of the PVC made will still be used as fabric. A lot of this fabric will go to make soft furnishings, in particular sofas, dining room chairs and beds.

UK Online Fabrics sell a huge range of PVC fabric and expect sales of this product to remain strong. More and more people are turning away from leather and buying PVC instead. They dislike the fact animals had to be killed to provide them with leather jackets and shoes, so prefer fake leather products, which will also feed demand.
