TV Makeover Shows and Media Coverage Changing Attitudes to Cosmetic Dentistry

March 20, 2013 – The increase in cosmetic dental treatments being featured within the media, particularly in association with ‘makeover TV programmes’ has led to an increase in demand for smile makeovers and teeth whitening. The correlation of demand to the airing of these types of TV programmes was shown in a study in New Zealand in which participants perceived an increased demand for tooth whitening (77.8%) and veneers (54.8%) subsequent to the airing of those television programmes, with 85.2% reporting patients mentioning “Extreme Makeover” in relation to aesthetic dentistry. These programmes often do not reflect the reality of these types of treatments and the importance of having these treatments carried out by properly qualified and experienced clinicians. As attitudes towards using cosmetic treatments to slow down the signs of aging continue to change a study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found that 54% percent of respondents thought that a smile can defy the effects of aging and 88% of those aged 30 to 39 would spend discretionary income to improve their looks.
